A shocking video has been circulating on social media in which George Floyd, a black man was choked to death by US policemen over a petty crime. The adjective “petty” stresses the barbarism perpetrated by the four policemen. No crime can ever justify the violation of the sanctity and dignity of a human life. Racism has always been a pervasive problem that has been observed in different eras across the globe and has always been a particularly pertinent issue in a heterogenous society such as America.
Former officer Derek Chauvin has since been charged with second-degree murder in Floyd’s death. Many celebrities have since joined the protests and have taken to their social media handles in order to express their solidarity against the egregious culture of racism that continues to pervade our society. Racism is categorically wrong. It can never, in any form be justified or condoned.
We all by birth retain the fundamental right to “life, liberty and property”. Such events continue to remind us that there is a systemic issue that has become a part of the white noise we all drown out. It is high time we stand up to this and raise our voices together to once and for all stamp out this scourge. Western celebrities to Bollywood divas, many top-notch names have rallied forward for justice and to voice their support for the movement #blacklivesmatter.
What made this movement somewhat extraordinary was the fact that most people were confined to their homes due to corona Virus outbreak but they still came out to illustrate their stance over this hideous crime pulled off by American Police. The protests have grabbed the attention of many ace celebrities as well and they have used their social media platforms to highlight the matter.
Black lives matter is a movement which has been originated owing to the violence on black men and is raising its voice against Racism. George Floyd’s murder sparked movement all across the globe and statues of Confederate leaders and the explorer Christopher Columbus have been torn down in the US, as pressure grows on authorities to remove monuments connected to slavery.
The movement has also sprung up in many countries across the globe and have had a huge impact on government & administration. From Paris to London, protesters did not come slow as they participated in one of the major movements in the world #blacklivesmatter.
Furthermore, George Floyd’s brother plead to “stop the Pain” and stated as follows;
“George called for help and he was ignored. Please listen to the call I’m making to you now, to the calls of our family and the calls ringing on the streets of all the world.”
Here is the list of renowned celebrities who raised voice against the incident!
Actors like Timothée Chalamet, Keke Palmer, and Zoe Kravitz have all taken part in protests, with Chalamet and Palmer demonstrating in Los Angeles, and Kravitz joining a Black Lives Matter march in London.
Singer Demi Lovato shared a picture that read, “I am tired of writing rest in peace.I wish black men could live in peace.” Alongside the picture, she added the caption,”This is not okay. And it will not stop until everyone does their part – especially white people. I said it recently and I’ll say it again: Do not let your discomfort surrounding social issues prevent you from speaking up for those in danger.”
Well celebrated actor Leonardo Dicaprio is all geared up to support the movement and he has also donated money to number of organizations;

Wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson questions president Donal Trump for not handling the situation right and support the movement #blacklivesmatter by posting a video on social media. He went on asking throughout the video and showed solidarity with black people.
“Where are you? Where is our leader?” Johnson starts out by asking. “Where is our leader at this time when our country is down on its knees, begging, pleading, hurt, angry, frustrated, in pain with its arms out, just wanting to be heard? “Where is our compassionate leader who’s going to step up to our country who’s down on its knees, and extend a hand and say, ‘You stand up, stand up with me because I got you. I hear you, I’m listening to you. And you have my word that I’m going to do everything in my power, until my dying day, my last breath, to do everything I can to create the change that is needed, to normalize equality because Black lives matter.’ Where are you?”
In sum, the world now more than ever needs to come together. It should no longer be an antagonistic narrative, an “Us VS Them” mindset. If 2020 has taught us all a lesson, then it surely is that after all the pain and suffering in the world around us, there needs to be a period of reconciliation, a time of healing and a new era in which we all cast aside our petty differences and strive collectively to create a better and more harmonious world.
