Fashion designing as we know it has evolved throughout the ages. Although modernization has drastically changed the Fashion Industry, it would be an unfair assumption to characterize the current trends as a product solely of this change. It is said that Fashion is as old as we are or maybe even older, considering the dinosaurs with their fancy frills and pointy spikes. The aesthetics of fashion as well the artistic skills required for invention is a gift of God, it cannot be taught. However, it can be enhanced with a rather modern innovation, fashion universities. We’re going to take a look at the top four fashion universities that undoubtedly influence the fashion trends in the world around us.
- The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)
First on our list is the Fashion Institute of Technology, also called the MIT of fashion. Located in New York City, home to the biggest fashion unicorns, it is part of the State University of New York. Being a public university, it is light on the pocket with an average cost of $12,000 per annum. Fashion Design, Fashion business management and Textile development are some of the specializations the university has to offer. The list of alumni speak for the credibility of the University, Michael Kors, Norma Kamali, Ralph Rucci and Nina Garcia are some of the biggest names.
- Parsons School of Design
Also based in New York, the Parsons School of Design is one of the colleges of the New School. Being a Private art and design college, it is heavy on the pocket costing around $50k per annum but is surely worth it. Established in 1896, it was one of the first institutions to offer courses on Fashion Design. The school is famous for having established close links with its alumnus which include Tom Ford, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, and Jason Wu. The workshops with alumnus as well as the pool of faculty members working in the Fashion Industry, give the graduates of Parsons a head start in their careers.
- London College of Fashion
Next up on our list is the London College of Fashion. Located in London, the LCF is a school of the University of the Arts, London. The popularity of this college comes from the wide range of courses they offer, which include an undergraduate degree, master’s degrees and a handful of short courses, making fashion education readily available for everyone even if they can’t be involved full time. Victoria Baker, Jimmy Choo, J.W. Anderson are some of the notable graduates of the college.
- Istituto Marangoni
Based in, Milan Italy, one of the Fashion Capitals of the world, Istituto Marangoni is a private fashion school established in 1935. It has caught our eye owing to its global presence, with branches in Milan, Paris, London, Miami, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and most recently Mumbai. The school is famous for its internationally diverse student body. The school has a mesmerizing list of alumnus which includes, Franco Moschino, Julie de Libran, Rahul Mishra, and Alessandro Sartori.
With fashion, just as in any other career the value of the right education should never be underestimated. These top schools routinely produce the leaders of the fashion world, arming their graduates with the right skills and connections to make it big.
